Interview form using multiple tables

Hey there. I'm trying to build a form that would be used during interviews with customers that represent ISPs or "networks." Each customer would be a new Network and that Network can have many Communities, Activities, Statistics, or Payments Plans associated with it. I'm running into several issues:

  1. When a network is new at the start of the interview, a record will not exist yet, so there cannot be a recordID yet. So, let's say an Interviewer enters information for Network X on page 1, then moves to page 2 to enter Communities affiliated with Network X. They would hit on the "Add Community" button page 2. A pop up opens but there isn't a network affiliated with the new Community record. I'm pretty sure I can get around this by making a rule or a button that forces the Network entry to be saved before moving to page 2. But I can't find a conclusive way to make a Save and Keep Working button and the default button is hidden at the end of the form.
  2. Let's say I save the network before moving to the next page. Now on Page 2 (Communities), if my interviewer hits a button to add Community, a pop up appears, they enter the information, and hit save. The pop up does not automatically redirect to the original interview form. It seems I would need to make a custom save button to do that.

Is there a more efficient way to build a data entry form in Quickbase that involves multiple tables without needing to build a bunch of custom buttons? I feel that I might be missing something obvious here.

Thank you

  • That's the problem, have it it open in the same page. That will force the save before leaving the screen of the unsaved Parent.

  • That is unexpected behaviour.  When I did a simple test of a new app with two tables, Parent and Children, and using new forms, when I hit the Add Child button while in Add mode on the Parent, it did auto save the Parent record and attach the Child to the Parent record.

Are you saying you are not seeing that behavior?

That's correct. Although I think I used the wrong term in my original post. When I hit Add Child, the child record opens in a new window (not a pop up), I fill the child record in, hit save. Then after hitting save, it redirects to the parent record but in this new window. The new window does not close and the original window with the original entry form does not update to show the child record unless I refresh. Refreshing isn't a real option though as I'm in the middle of entering other information.

Sorry, correction to my correction. It WAS a pop up not a new window
