Native address field map function

In my app, we're finding a really solid use-case for geolocation - especially since the latitude/longitude values will function in the street 2/street 1 fields respectively and actually put a pin on the map in the exact location specified.  The only issue I'm finding is that this map will only display when embedded in a form in edit mode.  If in view mode, the map does not display.  If the address field is on a table report and you click on the value to display the map popup - it will not display.  The map report itself will not plot the pins if only given latitude/longitude.

It's possible(likely) that I'm missing something super-simple, though.  I'm interested to find out what I'm missing.
