New option for multiple choice?

Does anyone know if there are release notes or an explantion of the new option in multiple choices fields, 'user input'? I can't seem to figure out what the intention is, or how to use that option.
It appears to simply change the MC field into a typical text field?------------------------------Mike Tamoush------------------------------

If you select User Input then the field reverts to being just a regular text field, upon the save. But you can flip it back to a multiple choice field again if you like and it will remember its previous choices.
