In general Automations owners do get error messages when an automation fails to complete and an error occurs. Since this is a system message sent out automatically it can at times get caught in people's spam filters or email clients like Mimecast and not end up in the same place as the mail they usually get from QB. If you check in with the Care team they can also look into the specific error and confirm if an email was sent, there are a few edge cases where specific automation errors don't send notifications, usually tied closely to authentication errors or downtimes.
