Is there anyway to select the record with the latest date of the group and show it in a report?

I have a set of records that have a date field and are part of different groups. Is there anyway to select the record with the latest date of the group and show it in a report? So instead of 12 groups...

Make a report of type "Summary" (ie not a table Report)

Summarize Date by Maximum and Group by "Group".
