Record Picker in Grid Edit

Has anyone found a way to improve how the record picker works in grid edit?

Say you are looking for the item that starts with CDV, When you type C it takes you to the beginning of the "C's" in the list and then when you hit D it jumps to the "D's" and so forth.  When even using the default record picker in a form it doesn't have that behavior.  I also tried creating a form for Grid Edit with a report for the picker and still reverts to single letter picking. 

Any ideas would be appreciated!
