Red Circle with line on Kanbans

If a user role is set to view only (no modify), when they look at a Kanban, they get a red x symbol. This is confusing as it discourages the user from even clicking on the card. Does anyone know if there is a creative work around? All I can think of is to set every field to no edit, instead of the entire table. Im not even sure that would work. Any ideas?
