Unable to change field type from Text - Multi-line to Text - Multiple Choice

I have a strange one.

I have a table with over 8,000 records. There is a field which is functioning as a multiple choice (drop down). When viewing the Fields list, the field shows type Text - Miulti-line. When I attempt to change it to Text - Multiple Choice, I receive an error saying the field type specified is the same as the current type. As I said, the field otherwise functions correctly on OLD FORMS.

BUT, when placing the field onto New Forms, a large textbox is displayed with no dropdown selector. You can see in the screen shot below, old form on left and new form on right.

I should add that copying the field just results in a new field suffering the same fate.

    Maybe the field got corrupted. 
    I suggest making a new field of type formula text. The formula is just the other field. 

    Then change the replacement field's field type to multiple choice. 

    it should be populated and be a proper multiple choice field.

      Thank you Mark. That solution worked well enough. Had to modify some reports and code pages, obviously, but all good otherwise.

      Strange little bug, that one. Thanks for the help.
