URL button to check a checkbox in edit mode

Is it possible to create a URL button to check a checkbox while the form is editable?  The reason I need it in edit mode is I am capturing the date/time when the checkbox is checked as well.

    It may be easier to create an audit field that you populate with the Last modified date and time using a form rule when you save the form after checking the check box.
