Why do some lookups suddenly become slow or inconsistent?

Lookups should be instant and perfect.  Support or a developer might have to look at a very specific situation example where it is either not performing with instant reponse or the results are inconsisten.  The only times I've seen weirdness with inconsistent values is when there are circular relationships. Unlike Excel, Quickbase doesn't really warn you of circular relationships.
