Add hyphens to phone number field

Hi All,

I have a phone number type field that you have to manually enter an individual's phone number w/ hyphens. Is there a way to use a formula phone number field to auto add the hyphens when a number is keyed into that field (and possibly add parentheses around the area code)? I haven't found anything yet that works.

Thanks in advance!

-Scott

  • Just checked the International checkbox in the field properties and it does not format as I was hoping for!

  • Can you explain the issue? Typically if you have a phone number type field it formats for display nicely regardless of spaces and hyphens entered it not entered.

  • Hi Mark,

Certainly, as the field is today, you have to manually add the parentheses as well as the hyphens for a 10 digit number. So for example, it you enter 555555555 it will show as such. I wasn't sure if there was a formula that as you enter the number it would convert it to (555) 555-5555

I had multiple users ask if this is a possibility to alleviate them adding in those special characters/key strokes every time they enter a phone number.

    Hope this answers your question?

    Thanks,

    -Scott

  • I don't believe there is a way to have the data entry format dynamically as it's being entered character by character.

But when you save the record it displays properly, right?

it displays however it is entered. I didn't know if a formula would be able to convert dynamically, or even upon saving.

In my testing on new and legacy forms, when I enter 10 digits it displays formatted as a proper looking phone number, once saved.

  • hmm interesting, i am using a legacy form and i don't see the same. i'm just using the simple phone number field type and don't see any formatting type options within the field properties.

I did however just check out a new form, and it does appear to format as I'd want to.

Might be time to convert the legacy form over to the new!

    Thanks again, Mark!!
