I have a link table that both are contact and project are connected to.

You would put the report link from that Join table onto the respective records as (respective) embedded tables to show the records on the form.  Then make a two reports to use show the correct columns.  You will pull down any lookup fields that you need for that report such as Project Name and Contact name, down to the join table so they are available for those embedded reports.
