API to transfer Data from one field to another

Hey Everybody, I am trying to figure out a way to write either an automation or an API that will transfer data from a Text field to a drop down field in a form that I am working on? My manager that...

Can you put this into context a bit more? Is this a one-time thing or a regular event? Is your Drop-down field a Text-Multiple Choice or is it from a related Table? What is the purpose of the fields? What do the entries into the fields represent?
