Automation to modify a parent

Is it possible to create an automation that when a child record is added, it modifies the parent?

    Yes that is definitely possible to do, but before going that route can you describe in a little more detail of the nature of what you want updated.
    It is quite possible that you would be better off using summary fields and formulas to control fields on  the parents as opposed to an automations.

      Looks like I just wasn't looking hard enough, I figured it out.
      I am creating a history tracker of an employee's billing classification.

    That is definitely possible but before you use that approach, can you get more specifics about what you would want updated? Because if it could be done through summary fields and formulas that would be a more reliable and less complicated way to do things.

    This is very much possible using automation. Make sure that you have the key field passed as where condition in the modify record filters to ensure only the required parent is updated.
