Calculating a sum of vacation days used this fiscal year back to previous fiscal year start

I am trying to calculate an employee's owed vacation days. I want to make sure I capture all of the days they might be owed, so I want to include the total used this fiscal year plus the total consume...

This is a summary filter or a report filter you can use the same technique.  
when
 ANY of 

[date] is during the current year
[date] is during the previous year.

      ya "During" is handy.

      As an aside, if you only wanted to get totals from two years ago but not last year you do this kind of filter  

      ALL of
      date is during the previous 2 years
      date is not during the current year
