Creating a table to table relationship with specific reference field

Question

We have already created a table with all of our AE's and Project Requests. Now we need to connect them (each AE has many project requests), but the reference field we want is not showing up as an option. Why could that be?

I have seen this happen when the reference field has already been used on a different relationship.

I just create a mirror field called like
[Related AE Mirror]
with a formula of [Related AE], and then base the Relationship on that field.
