Daily Census from Admit Date / Discharge Date

I have a table with individual customers that are housed in one of our facilities.  Updates to these records occur every hour.  I can create a Summary Table where Admit Date is less than or equal to today and Discharge Date is greater than or equal to today.  This gives me a count of total customers on any given day that I run the Summary Table for.  I can then select .more. and copy the summary report to another table.  Is there a better way to accomplish this?  Is there an automated way to do this?  Is there a way to keep prior days up to date as discharge date may be back dated and cause issues moving forward.
