Display message when field in not unique?

I have a field that should be unique. It all works fine, and it displays the error message from Quickbase saying that the field is not unique when it isn't.
But, my users are new to Quickbase, and frankly said, will not understand the mistake causing the error. (I already changed the field name to a line explaining the problem, but I don't think this will work in practice). Also, the unique field is in the beginning of a long form, so I don't want them to spend all that time to find out it cannot be saved.
Is there a way to display a message when the value in that field changes to a non-unique value?
