Duration and date timer that automatically pauses

Can you post complete info on what you have so far? Field types and definitions, formulas you've got, and the automation setup you've got in place?

It sounds like 'pause countdown in date field' might not be the right way to approach this task but your current setup isn't really clear from the language in your post, which makes it very hard to work out a solution.
