Hiding Sensitive Info

Is there way to hide information in *****, in fields such as client passwords, social security numbers, etc.?

    I think the best way to do that would be to have a formula field that counted the number of characters in the field, and then replaced them with *****. I know there is a response to this problem, but I have no clue how to find it since all my bookmarks from the old community just redirect me back to the new community page. Let me do some hunting and see what I can come up with.
