How to Build a Selection Tool

Hi - I need a bit of help understanding how best to structure what I would call a "selection tool".  In order to simplify the explanation of what I am trying to do, I'd like to use an analogy of selecting tires, and wheels for an automobile.  My project is a bit more complicated but I think this will be a more easy to visualize.

For tires,
For Wheels,
For vehicles:

So, the user would be able to select (drill down) to a specific vehicle or tire and the selection tool would recommend a compatible wheel.   The wheel would need to satisfy a comparison of a few fields on both the tire and the vehicle.

So far I have struggled to get the relationships organized such that the user can make the appropriate selections.  When that is set up correctly I expect that I can import the details for the different items.

It may be that this is not the best tool for the job but I thought I could get this working.   It is proving to be a challenge.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • I think it's possible natively though, I would probably have to work with you one on one to get this working.

I can see the user selecting qualified Tire SKUs  by choosing a Tire Type.

That would qualify a large set of Tire Sizes, which in fact would be a whole set of particular Tire SKUs which would meet the Tire Type.

So say I'm  looking for High Performance Tires, and a whole set of possibilities open up.  That will be done in Quick Base my having a User Focus Table where the key field is the Userid and recording that I'm looking for high performance Tires.

then I drill down to choose my vehicles and identify my daily drive which is currently a year 2000 BMW 328. That will identify a whole set of Sizes which Qualify.  Again, the valid sizes will now be Illuminated because they are the valid sizes for my particular Bimmer model year for my trim.

So now the set of possible Tire SKUs from the Type selection can be dramatically lowered as we now know the sizes which are possible and the Tire which are the right Type and the right Size are now illuminated.

but now we can identify the wheels which would support the illuminated Sizes for the illuminated Tire SKUs.

In my head, it sounds possible. Contact me via email if you want to discuss working through this together to implement this via the user focus technique.  Basically the User Focus technique will put focus, for any particular user, on their selections and flow that information through the relationships using summary fields to illuminate qualified choices.
