Import Field : Formatting Font

We use QuickBase to review changes to requirements. Is there a way to allow us to format font in a field without applying the code to the entire field contents? (as below?)

I want to demonstrate be able to show the user what has changed in the requirement clearly. In the past we have been able to format the font in excel and import it into the database but that is no longer working, and of course there is no way to format the font manually I'm unsure how to format the font manually

  • Thank you, I've taken the proposal to change the field type to rich text to my team. This doesn't 100% solve our problem because we use excel to import the requirements which are sometimes uploaded in batches as large as 100+ , so opening each record to format the text is still not ideal but at least it's an option to consider. I hope in the future QB finds a way to allow formatted text to be imported.

Ohhhh, what happens when you try to import Rich Text from a .xlsx file into a Rich Text field type?

  • I'm not quite sure I understand your question but let's start with getting the obvious solution out of the way. Are you familiar with Rich Text fields where you can just copy paste or manually edit Rich Text?  If you don't have that and you need to help me understand what the question is.

In QuickBase, you can easily apply formatting (bold, color, italics, highlighting) to only specific parts of the text within a field, rather than the entire contents. The best way to achieve this is by changing the field type to Rich Text. This enables a built-in editor toolbar that allows users to select and format just the changed portions of a requirement, making it clear to reviewers what has been updated.

While Excel-based formatting imports used to work in the past, this method is no longer reliable because QuickBase uses HTML for rich text. As an alternative, users can manually apply formatting either through the visual editor or by entering simple HTML tags (such as <span style="color:red; font-weight:bold;">) directly in the field. This approach provides a clean and sustainable solution for visually highlighting changes without needing complex workarounds.

    • Roughly how long is each requirement text? (Short paragraphs or very long documents?)
    • Do you want to show changes with color (e.g., red for new, strikethrough for deleted), or is bold/highlight enough?
    • Are multiple people editing the same requirement, or is it usually one person updating it?
    • Do you also need to track version history or dates alongside the highlighted changes?
