QR Codes

Question

I'm just starting a thread to try to get some input/discussion on the fundamental implementation of using QR codes for asset tracking, within Quickbase. If i have a field tech that is going to catalog assets, what is the best practice in doing this? Below is my current thought process, but I might be coming at it wrong. I think I am misunderstanding a fundamental principle, because I don't know how I utilize the new QR code function within QB.

1) Print out sheets of QR codes onto weather proof labels. Both developing the QR codes and labels would be independent of Quickbase.
2) Field tech applies a sticker to an asset. Takes a picture of the sticker and uploads that as a file attachment to Quickbase.
3) Field tech fills out Serial Numbers, attaches more pictures, etc etc.
4) Manager (or anyone party logged in from computer responsible for QR codes) changes the dynamic QR code link to say, the url for that particular asset.
5) Any time someone needs the info on the asset, scan the QR code sticker on the asset.

That's where I am at, what am I missing...?? What is the intention for the new QR option in the mobile QB app?

The purpose of the Bar code / QR code reading is so you can do the data entry of the bar code value into a field on the mobile app. I doubt that you want to take a picture of the bar code. More likely you want to locate the asset off an existing asst or else or create the asset record, then affix the sticker and do the code data entry via the mobile app.

He will edit the asset record and scan the code into the code field.

Perhaps my understanding of the Barcode is wrong. The way I picture it, when you create the Bar Code, there will be a link or data associated with it. Let's say generically we print out 500 bar codes with the numbers 1,2,3,4...500 associated.When the tech sticks the code on the asset,and scans the code, won't all that will happen is it will put the number '1' into the field he scans with?I need him to then enter other information, change the detail associated with that code, and also have an image of that code associated with that item. I'm not seeing how all that would be accomplished.------------------------------Mike Tamoush------------------------------

Typically bar codes are ugly to human enter due to their length.&nbsp; So the purpose of scanning a bar code, indeed, is simply to get an ugly long number into a data entry field, error free.If you have a business purpose to uploading an image of the asset or for some reason an image of the bar code tag (i can't understand why, but that's up to you), then sure you can also upload pictures either into a child table of pix for that asset or to dedicated fields on the asset record.&nbsp; If are gong to have a variable number of pics for an asset record, a child table is a better way to go.&nbsp; There are ways to display thumbnails of the images even if they are child records, and even to float up the images to to the Parent record if you need to.------------------------------Mark Shnier (YQC)Quick Base Solution ProviderYour Quick Base Coachhttp://QuickBaseCoach.commarkshnier2@gmail.com------------------------------
