Sorting & Grouping in a Report

I have a simple question.  

In a normal table report when I am trying to click the option summary option, I get the error:

To show a summary table, you must choose a field for sorting and grouping.

In what situations I can group records so that I have records grouped accordingly? Can I have several groups.
  • Table reports can just Sort, or "Sort and Group by"

    Grouping means to show subtotals by Group.

    If you choose to group by, then you have the option of displaying a recap of just the subtotals at the end of the report.
  • I NEED to hide grouping option.. is giving users access to confidential information... how do I do this?
  • Can you explain how Grouping is revealing confidential information?   Also , while I hate to take away power form users, does that Role of users need the ability to modify reports?
