Do you have a relationship where One Item Number has Many Inventory Records? If so, what you want to do is to make a summary field on that Relationship to total up the total qty or the total # of Inventory records and put that on your Item Number Master form.
To make a Summary field you go into the relationship and use the link on the left side to Add Summary field.
