So in discussion with a few people, it is apparent that the mobile version of Quickbase is unable to create a Parent record from the generation of a Child record.
I am going to have to submit a feedback request to have this functionality added.

6 years agoI would give you some votes for that, so please post a link to your User Voice. I ran into this limitation myself recently. I had to use an Automation to create the Parent, and it was very awkward.

- AndrewFry6 years agoQrew Assistant CaptainThanks Mark!! I appreciate the support.
I find it unusual that a common practice standard in the desktop version is non-functional in the mobile version.
Granted, the mobile version is much newer and is still going through growing pains, right.
And I am grateful to even have the mobile version as it is today.
I will post that link here once I get it submitted.

------------------------------ - AndrewFry6 years agoQrew Assistant CaptainMark, I did a bit of research in the User Voice and found a few ideas that have already been posted regarding this same issue. Once back as far as 2014!!!!
This one already has 33 votes, since 2016:

So the need has been present for not 5 years.
I am going to be adding 3 votes to the one that has 33 votes. I invite you to do the same if you would like.
Hopefully we can get this fixed.

I can confirm that the message is intended behavior, right now Mobile doesn't support adding a parent record directly when picking a related parent record on a child. The process would be to add the Parent first and then come back to add the Child record.
It is something that is on the radar of the Mobile team, but that message would be correct. I actually don't think we have a UV request specifically on enabling adding a parent record directly from the child form, those other UV requests are more around how other parts of the behavior acts, one being on the Add a Child button showing up on a parent record on mobile and the others being about default settings for behavior when adding child records to parent records across the platform. I would still suggest making a UV request for that functionality, since it never hurts to make it clear that the need is there even if it is on their radar.

I will go ahead and submit my own UV to clarify the issue. Hopefully it will gain some traction as this is a huge process flow inhibitor.
Thanks again Evan.

May I inquire as to how you set up the automation to get it to work? I think that may be my only viable avenue to achieve the results and process flow I am after.
Thank you very much!

In my case all I needed to do was to create an entry in the Parent Table. I did not actually have to link it back to actually be the parent of the record I was creating.
But let me describe what i did and what I would do to complete the circle.
I set up a checkbox field on the form to "Create parent". That opened up input fields on the form (using form rules) to capture the information I needed.
Upon save, that triggered an Automation to create the Parent record. What I would then do is I would also record on that Parent record, the [Record ID#] of the child that now needs updating as it has to be linked ot [Related Parent] (but at time of save, we do not know that [Record ID#].
So then i would cause an Automation to trigger when a parent is created and there is a [Record ID#] to be updated on a child, to actually write back to that Child record to link it.
