I think you about summed it up... My experience using the Quick Base app is the same. The only way I can see to 'download' the image would be to take a screenshot.
HOWEVER,
My mobile browser experience is different. Long pressing (iPhone X) on the thumbnail while in view or edit mode gives me multiple options (see images).
