Where can I find information about all of the commands used in building a URL formula?

I'm trying to understand what all of the characters do in URL formula's (i.e. a=). I keep copy and pasting various URL's from the forums and cobbling them together with various levels of success, but I don't really understand exactly what they are doing most of the time. Where can I find a guide or repository with this information?
