I presume you were saying that you are sitting on a child record which is being edited or created and you were looking at a drop-down list of parent records. You are looking to prevent the user from adding a parent.
Can you tell us whether the Role is allowed to add parent records? If you change the Role provisions permissions for that role so the user is not able to add parents then there will be no choice to add a parent to the drop-down.
If he user does need to have the ability to Add parents but you just don't want them adding parents in that manner, I believe if you change the user interface settings for the Role to hide the add parent button then that option will also be suppressed.
