It will definitely work in new forms too.  I'm not a "pro" yet on those, but try this: 

Make an unfiltered Report of Contacts to be used for the embedded report of Contacts.  call, it Used on Project form

Then put a "Report Component" on the Form and then select that report and then set the form element to filter the form element with your Report Link field.
