Identifying/warning of a duplicate before adding via an automation.

Because I have made a field "must be unique" in a table that I am adding records, when I manually try to enter a duplicate data into the field I get the canned QB message that the field must be unique. However, if when I copy data from one table to another via an automation, the record is added but the "marked unique" field is left blank. Any idea how the user can get a warning of a duplicate before triggering the automation to add the duplicate record.
