Multi Select Field with Links?

Is there anyway to turn your selections in a multi select field into links?

I tried making a rich text field that was a link, and then referencing that field in my multi select field, but that didn't work. Is it even possible?

  • So is this the scenario?

There is a list of fruits in a multi select field type and the User selects all their favourite fruits in edit mode.

Then in view mode they see a list of fruits, but each one is hyperlinked and will take them to a specific record assigned to that fruit.

Yes. And the list of fruits is say in a table called, 'Fruits'. And each record is a different fruit and so the multi-select field simply gets its options from that field.

  • I think you'll need to switch around your approach. You'll have to build the formula so that it references the selections in the Text Multi-select field and produces a link/links from that. Use the drop-down on Add/Edit and the formula on View.

In reality, though, I might encourage you to use a different approach altogether and have a child table to both your "fruits" table and the table where the current drop-down is. Your users could just use the embedded child report in Grid Edit to select their options when building the record.

It's funny because essentially I am trying to create something a child table does very easily. One of my users complaints/asks is, can we just select a number of things from a field, instead of adding children. No one likes the 'save and next...save and next...save and next...". They would rather just select a number of items.

I think you may be suggesting not to actually have my users create the children, but use a report link creatively to host the 'links'. Also would work, but I have so many report links on this particular table it's just looking messy, and I like the idea and sleekness of a simple multi select field.

I think I could probably come up with a way as you suggest, to create a formula off my multiselect that hosts the links. But that still gives me extra fields on my page. I'm hoping to clean up the user experience, and thought it would be real nice to use the multi-select, and then simply click on those options in view mode to 'hyperlink' to those records.

Obviously, with so many alternate solutions, this isn't anything holding me up, but now that my tables are getting crowded and messy, every little trick and design maneuver can help the end user experience. I'm currently trying to see what types of creative things I can come up with to reduce the number of report links, which I find a bit obtrusive. I wish I had control over my Report Link to make it just a clean, minimal box (removing grid edit, full report, etc etc). That would help too.

I do have a quick select method we could implement where a user launches off a parent record into a report of possible children and then click click click is as fast as they want to add multiple children and then click to return to the parent to see those children added.

If we have not already implemented that technique in one of your apps we could get on a zoom call and do that together.
