I suggest redesigning the app to allow the user to quick select multiple unlimited selections from an unlimited number of choices.
I think that you are trying to use the using the multi select field type for purposes it was not design for as a short cut to avoid making a many to many relationships.
If you contact me directly i can give you a demo of what the user experience would be. part is you reticence may be that selecting a lot of choices off a many to many relationships is too slow, but I can demo to you a native alternative.
