Notification to a specific role in an app

I saw that this was asked 4 years ago... I'm hoping there's be an update in this functionality.

I'm trying to send a notification email based on a "Approved" checkbox... and I need this email to go out to anyone in a particular role in the app.

The answer 4 years ago was to make a group of the people in the respective role, and to manually update the group as people came and left that role.
