reference field is not editable (replaced by drop-down)

I have a reference field in the table 1, which provides look-ups from table 2. For some reason after setting a connection it becomes a drop-down, containing all values from table 2 and it does not ...

If you want free form entry, then you can break the relationship (but do not delete the reference field or you will lose all your data) and then create a new field called [xxx for relationship]. Make it a formula field equal to your data entry field. 

Then make the relationship based on the formula field.
