Required Fields for updating Existing Records

Hi,
Using Import file feature in QB, I'm trying to update one field in a table and providing the unique identifier for that table. However, QB errors and asks for other fields in that table that are required to create new records. I'm not creating any new records just updating existing records and providing the unique identifier for each record.
Can anyone explain the logic in QB about updating records with Import feature?
Regards,

  • It's possible that fields were not required when records were created, but became required later...

Now that you're attempting to edit, it is enforcing the required fields.

An option is to unrequire the fields, but require them on the form. So the Requireness is only for hand edits v

        Hi Mark,
Thanks for your guidance, yes those fields were not required originally but later requirements were changed. For this update task, I provided info for all the required fields and it worked OK. However, it seems redundant that when you have a way to identify each record, but still need to provide info for fields that are not even being updated.

    Muhammad,

I agree with Ryan.  I have had this happen a number of times as business process rules grow.  Tables that were created years ago with a hand full of demographic data now have a hundred fields and several new parent tables.   Going back and clicking edit on old data means that you have to update all the required fields now in order to change or update one piece of information.

So to get around this, make a list of the currently required fields.
Go to the table properties and clear the check box for the requirement
Reset them to required after your import.

This is very clugy way to get it done but the data will load.
