Search Option - Similar to Homepage Widget

Is there a method to add a search function at the top a from that will function similar to a search widget you can have on the homepage?

To be more specific  - I am trying to have the search, access data in a seperate table (yes the table is linked through a relationship) , and like the ability to see the preview of the results the homepage widget presents.
