set role permissions api
is it possible to setup role permissions (like what tables they can view) via the API?

No - Thats not a built in feature of the API as it currently sits today.
Its a little risky to be able to configure role permissions without any manual checks in place to make sure it's accurate, or to have an automated process configuring roles.
