Timestamp a Checkbox

Question

I am looking to timestamp a checkbox that will be edited in Grid Edit (so a form rule is not an option). Is there a formula I can use in another field to timestamp the user/date? A lot of results I am finding suggest an automation but those aren't available anymore. I'm scared of the P word (pipeline) but I'll figure it out if a formula isn't available. Thanks!

If you are scared of 'P' , You can consider 'A' aka QuickBase 'Actions' (they are arcane , but boy they are fast).

I have a formula field with value now() , I run an action which simply copies the value from formula field to timestamp field.

I'm having issues with using Now(). I'm finding that it is a dynamic value that always shows the current date &amp; time when refreshed. I apparently can't use Actions because I'm trying to update a field in the same form. When I check a box I need a field to record the time/date and user who checked the box. I can do this with a formula but it's not a static value and keeps updating on a page reload. I get the same results by using a mirror field. So I resulted to using a pipeline and it works fine, except you can't see the value until the page is reloaded. It works but not quite like I need it to. This seems like it should be easier to achieve and I feel like I'm overlooking something, like I can't see the forest because I'm too close to the tree!
