I happen to be presenting at Empower this year on a session related to Form design. The application I plan on using to help illustrate some Form design concepts is called "Headcount" and is designed to track employee work schedules along with PTO. Built in to the app is the ability for employees to request PTO for manager approval. Most importantly - it addresses what you initially asked about, which is how to design a Home page that is specific to the user that is logged in.
Imagine an employee logging in and immediately seeing their user record and being able to navigate that record all from the home page.
Imagine the manager being able to see his/her record, but also the records of direct reports.
If all goes according to plan- this app will be made available in The App Exchange.
