If your setup is Orders<Defects, I'm unclear why you're using a Snapshot of the Summary of Max Record ID# from the Defects. Could you not just use the Record ID#?
Also, I would encourage you to create a way for your users to mark a record as "Invalid" or something similar instead of giving them the ability to delete. This way, you have all of your historical data that you can look back on.
