Multiple choice field option "From another field" not populating

Hello All,

I created a multiple choice field (1st Therapy) and populated my list within that field.  I then created a 2nd multiple choice field (2nd Therapy) and clicked the "From Another Field" option and linked my 1st Therapy field so it will pull from my original list.  I only wanted one list for therapy's that is carried over several field as I can have several therapies per product and I only wanted to change one field and not both.

However when i go to use the 2nd therapy field nothing is populating, the field is completely blank.  I am not sure what the problem is, I have delete the field and recreated it but still with the same result.

What am I missing?  I have used this function before and can't seem to find why this particular field will not populate.

Thank you

Jennifer

  • I think when you use that "from another field" in fact it bases the choices from the data in the other field and not the drop down choice in the other field.  I try to avoid that method.

  • Hi Jennifer,

Mark would be correct when you base a field on another field it isn't pulling the list from the field settings it is instead pulling each option that exists within that table for that field. So for example if your field has 8 choices but within the existing records you have only ever selected 2 of those choices when you use this setting you would only pull in those two choices into the field. So most likely what is missing is options in the field settings that have no corresponding record. I agree with Mark I usually caution people against this option as it doesn't always create eh synchronicity between the two fields people are looking for and many times people use this to try to achieve a relationship but it doesn't have the functionality of a relationship.
