Text Lookup field shows "error displaying report" instead of value

I have two text lookup fields that are displaying the same error: However, the same two lookup fields display properly in the form for the child table: Is anyone familiar with this error...

I've run into this same bug many times, but in my cases it is always with the report link field and not the lookup field. I can fix it in a report link field with the following process, perhaps in some weird way if you performed these steps on the report link field, it would fix the lookup field?

1. Edit the form properties of the report link.
2. Whatever is selected for 'Base the display on the report' change to anything else.
3. Save, then repeat the same steps and change it back to what you want.

Thanks Mike. Just had the same problem - the proxy field for a relationship replaced by error text - and toggling the report link on the same form fixed it.

    Confirming Jeremy's note that changing the report used for selecting the related field and back to the default record picker in the form settings corrected the field without having to recreate it. In my case the field was a reference proxy.
