No, I would not recommend changing an existing field. You're right to question that. I'm suggesting that you test with a new text field to make sure that your issue is with the field type. Although I'm fairly confident it is, you can use the test text field to confirm. Please do not change your existing field. Apologies if my suggestion was unclear
