Has anyone used QB as the foundation for a Sales Configurator tool or Estimating System? Goal is to build and price simple assemblies from a database of parts.

I want a simple product configurator tool.  You should be able to drill down to products that will work for a particular application and create a bill of material or part order list.

I can give you a demo of an app which does costing of sub assemblies or "kitting" and allows for the roll up of the costs and the margin calculations for a set selling price of a Kit or a System. A system is a number of kits sold together. The app was initially designed for sound systems.

For example, what  would normally call a speaker is in fact composed of a cabinet, a driver, perhaps a stand, and some wires. Taken together that becomes a kit.    The App also deals with inventory control of the individual components that go into a kit and the kits themselves. It started out as a simple application but it turns out that the whole business of keeping track of inventory of either components and kits does tend to get a bit complicated!

In this up a standard System might be composed of say for speakers of a particular kind plus an amplifier and some wiring.  So there would be a set price for solving a system and again the system would have a roll up  of its costs of its kits which are roll up of the cost of its components.

You can contact me via the information on my profile if you would like a demo.

Mark, I'm in the midst of setting up a quote application that needs to do costing of sub-assemblies.  Can you share a high level over view on your approach?  Thanks, JIm
