With my solution, you have to be really calculated about the way you put fields on the same row. It requires that you maintain the same number of columns through the entire section, which is why I only usually do this with reports because it is easier to maintain.
So if you have 3 columns you want to show on the first section and 3 you want on the second section, you will need to have 6 columns on each row all the way down. If you don't have a field to fill the column with, you can use a blank text field with html selected and an invisible tag.
Admittedly, for your use case I think Blake's solution might be a better fit.
