One trick that I have had to use is that Dynamic Form Rules DO know what role your user is in. So you can do some sneaky stuff using that. Depending on exactly where you need to be able to access that information, you may be able to get around it. I have a use case where I use form rules to check a box if the user is in one of a subset of roles, and I can use that check box in conditions downstream. Of course that requires that I know my user is going to be in an Add Form on that particular table prior to the point where I need to know what role they were in.
