Looking for the best way to lookup the Sales Tax Rate for a Zip Code.  I have a Company table with an Address field and when the Address is entered, I need to look up the Zip Code in the Sales Tax Rate table and display the Sales Tax Rate for that Zip Code on the Company data entry form.

I was planning on using a Formula field using Case, but there are about 1,000+ Zip Codes and was wondering if others were able to create a table relationship to handle this better.

Case([Postal Code], "92841", 0.08, "92806", 0.085, null)

Thanks

Jim

No problem.

Import in your table of zips and tax rates.

Set the Key field as zip

Make a relation back to the company field where the zip ( Postal code)  is the refence field. If zip as part of an address field, then make a stand alone formula field for zip.

You can get Sales Tax Tables in CSV format for all 50 states from this site:

http://www.taxrates.com/download-tax-tables/

States like Michigan have one tax rate for all counties (or Zip Codes). But there might be some oddity as I think one location in Michigan actually has a Wisconsin Zip Code simply because Zip Codes are nothing more than labels for delivery and have no geopolitical significance.

Other States like New York have a much more complicated Sales Tax structure with Sales Tax at the State, County, City and a special issue level.

In any event, tax rates change ever now and then so it would be better to use a web service to calculate the Sales Tax or simplify the calculation for your individual clientele or line of business.
